Chulalongkorn University’s Biodiversity Policy

Chulalongkorn University’s mission is to be a centre of academic learning and professional excellence. It strives to create internationally-recognised academic research and innovations, provide a sense of public responsibility and contribute to the nation’s cultural conservation.

The university is pursuing sustainable development in line with the  United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) both nationally and globally through 4 major means: In-Campus Policy and Operation, Research and Operations, Teaching and Learning and Outreach and Social Engagement. In addition to its Bangkok campus, Chulalongkorn University has campuses located in Nan, Saraburi, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Phang Nga provinces.  These sites have both terrestrial and aquatic ecological diversity. In addition, the university not only possesses vast human resources: faculty, staff and students with outstanding capability in various academic fields, but it is in a capacity to provide related product support services. The university’s biodiversity policy:

  1. Aims to complete its mission of academic instruction, research, student affairs and public services, focusing on biodiversity restoration and sustainable use.
  2. Seeks cooperation with national and international agencies in effective biodiversity management.
  3. Promotes value addition, innovation development and biodiversity utilization through national and international integration of different scientific disciplines.
  4. Strives to create a conscience aiming to preserve natural resources, the environment and local wisdom.

Policy 1. Chulalongkorn University has a mission that our teaching, research, student affairs, and academic and social services aim for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity resources and sustainable utilization

Guidelines

1.1 Academic agencies and productivity support units of Chulalongkorn University jointly prepare and conduct classes and research for:

  • Monitoring, examining, and assessing the diversity of flora and fauna in the university grounds.
  • Monitoring, examining, and assessing the conservation status of plants and animals in the university grounds in accordance with domestic laws (e.g. Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019)) and international law (e.g.  Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)), as well as conservation status according to the IUCN Red List, for preventive measures.
  • Monitoring, examining, and assessing the status and reducing the impact of alien species that threaten the diversity of local flora and fauna in the university grounds.

1.2 Academic agencies and productivity support units of Chulalongkorn University jointly conduct classes, research, and support student affairs as well as academic and social services to achieve the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and sustainable use such as:

  • Ecological education course for communities at local and national levels.
  • Curriculum on ecological management for sustainable agriculture and tourism for communities at local and national levels.
  • Educational courses on ecological care and preservation with participation of local communities.

Policy 2. Promote and support cooperation with national and international agencies in the systematic and efficient management of biodiversity resources.

Guidelines

Academic agencies and productivity support units of Chulalongkorn University seek cooperation with national and international agencies in the systematic management of biodiversity resources in various fields as follows.

  • Cooperate with national and international agencies to organize activities to promote the preservation and utilization of ecosystems sustainably.
  • Cooperate with national and international agencies to develop practices that will preserve and sustain the ecosystems and biodiversity, both plants and animals, especially in threatened ecosystems.
  • Collaborate with local communities to maintain the ecosystems in a participatory manner.

Policy 3. Promote value-added creation, innovation development, and biodiversity utilization by integrating national and international sciences.

Guidelines

Academic agencies and productivity support units of Chulalongkorn University jointly conduct classes and research to promote value-added creation, develop innovation, and utilize biodiversity resources by integrating national and international sciences to:

  • Promote the conservation, restoration, and sustainable utilization of biodiversity resources in ecosystems within the university’s grounds.
  • Promote the conservation, restoration, and sustainable utilization of biodiversity resources in ecosystems of regions, countries, and the world.

Policy 4. Strengthen awareness of conservation of natural resources, environment, and local wisdom

Guidelines

Chulalongkorn University’s academic agencies and productivity support units raise the awareness of students, faculty members, and other university’s personnel on natural resource conservation, environment, and local wisdom, by

  • Taken into consideration, the potential impact on local biodiversity whenever activities are implemented.
  • Proceed with planning and development with due consideration of the potential impact on local biodiversity.
  • Collaborating with local communities to maintain ecosystems in the university’s operational areas.
