Chulalongkorn University places strong emphasis on promoting sustainable water management education for local communities. The University provides academic outreach programs and learning opportunities designed to enhance community knowledge and capacity in effective water use, conservation of water resources, and sustainable management practices. These activities include free workshops, public lectures, and participatory learning sessions that focus on hands-on experiences, enabling local residents to apply practical water management knowledge in their own contexts.
Examples of Community-based Water Management Projects 2024–2025
Project on the Development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for Sub-district Level Water Management (Na Shaw Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Bo Suak Subdistricts, Mueang District, Nan Province)
On January 9–10, 2024, the Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the School of Agricultural Resources, Chulalongkorn University conducted fieldwork to monitor progress and provide technical knowledge on the development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for subdistrict-level water management in Na Shaw Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Bo Suak Subdistricts, Mueang District, Nan Province
The project involved data collection on water resources, mapping, and spatial analysis of flooding and drought problems, followed by community-driven solution planning—such as the construction of temporary weirs and solar-powered pumping systems.
This initiative not only strengthens local capacity in water management without cost but also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Workshop on Water Quality Management for Village Water Supply Operators and Water Sampling for Laboratory Analysis
The Center of Learning Network for the Region (CLNR), Chulalongkorn University organized a free workshop on water quality management for village water supply system operators and water sampling for laboratory testing on March 20, 2025, at the Pink Phuka 6 Hall, Phasing Research and Technology Transfer Station, Phasing Subdistrict, Mueang Nan District, Nan Province. The event was attended by 75 representatives from various subdistricts across Nan Province.
The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and understanding of community water system management and to strengthen the capacity of local water supply operators. Participants learned how to maintain and monitor water quality sustainably in their respective communities. The training also covered proper water sampling techniques, including the collection process, transportation methods, and interpretation of laboratory analysis results, ensuring more accurate and reliable water quality assessments.
In addition, the workshop invited lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (Nan Campus) to deliver a special lecture on “Policies and Directions for the Development of Village Water Supply Quality in Thailand.” Participants also engaged in hands-on practice using a model water supply system, learning about safe chemical handling, and practical methods for collecting water samples for testing.
This initiative reflects Chulalongkorn University’s commitment to promoting community-based learning and capacity building in sustainable water management, providing educational opportunities for local communities to gain essential skills and knowledge in maintaining safe and efficient water systems, in line with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
