Land Use Plan for a Regional Learning Network Center in Nan Province
Chulalongkorn University has been using a plot of public land that had been left vacant to create a high-technology institute for the educational development of residents of Nan province.
After the university made the application and all necessary procedures were completed, an announcement was made on April 27, 2006, in the Royal Gazette, Book 123, Section 44, titled “Registration of State Lands for Use by Public Bodies in Tambon Lainan, Wiangsa District, Nan Province”.
The announcement granted Chulalongkorn University the use of land in Moo 2 of Tambon Lainan covering an area of 2,116 rai, 3 ngan and 80 square wah (approximately 338.7 hectares) to set up the Nan Province Research and Technology Transfer to Localities Station, which is now called the Lainan Research and Technology Transfer Station.
Highlighted under its master plan is a plan for biodiversity education, which seeks to collect information on biodiversity and the natural environment as well as promote integrated management of local natural resources in the Nan watershed.
The main topographical feature of the land is a complex slope. The western side is a plain with hills interspersed with large water channels. Most of the land has forest cover, with three ponds and a large reservoir.
Land Use Principles
Chulalongkorn University, in its land use policy, keeps in mind the preservation of natural resources and the ecosystem. Buildings and structures are constructed in small clusters. They are organized as research-oriented clusters to support academic research and studies.
Nan Province home to world-class natural resources and located at the juncture of three ecosystems: Burmese-Himalayan, Indochina and Malaysian-Peninsula. Chulalongkorn University, consequently, has formulated a land use strategy emphasizing research on biodiversity and knowledge transfer as crucial tools for ecosystem conservation.
Support for Plant Genetic Conservation
The Nan provincial administration has appointed a subcommittee for the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Initiative of Her Royal Highness Chakri Sirindhorn. The subcommittee, on which Chulalongkorn University is represented, has designated the land used by the university as the area for the project. At present, the land has been planted for plant genetic conservation.
