Chulalongkorn University Policy on Biodiversity Management and Conservation
Chulalongkorn University, as one of Thailand’s leading higher education institutions, is committed to academic excellence, the cultivation of graduates, the advancement of research, and the provision of academic services to society, while preserving and promoting arts and culture.
Guided by its vision for sustainable development, the University aligns its operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through four key missions:
- (1) Policy and Operation – implementing sustainability practices within the University,
- (2) Research and Innovation – generating new knowledge and technological solutions,
- (3) Teaching and Learning – integrating sustainability concepts into education, and
- (4) Outreach and Social Engagement – extending knowledge and impact to society.
With operational areas spanning Bangkok and other provinces—Nan, Saraburi, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, and Phang Nga—the University manages diverse terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Supported by its rich human resources and multidisciplinary expertise, Chulalongkorn University establishes the following Policy on Biodiversity Management and Conservation:
Clause 1: Promote academic teaching, research, student affairs, and community engagement that support the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity.
Clause 2: Encourage and support programs and activities that emphasize the sustainable conservation, restoration, and utilization of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including forests, mountains, soils, drylands, wetlands, freshwater, brackish water, marine environments, and habitats for wildlife and aquatic species.
Clause 3: Support or participate in projects and initiatives to identify, monitor, protect, and conserve endangered plant and animal species, particularly those listed in the IUCN Red List, as well as species protected under Thailand’s Plants Act, B.E. 2518 (1975) and Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019). The University also complies with relevant international conventions such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Clause 4: Monitor, assess, and establish management measures for Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and Conflict Species that pose threats to ecosystems within University areas, minimizing their environmental impact.
Clause 5: Ensure that University development projects—including new constructions and renovations—comply with the Building Control Act, energy efficiency standards, and environmental design guidelines aligned with the Thai’s Rating of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (TREES). All construction and operational activities must consider potential impacts on biodiversity within the University and surrounding communities.
Clause 6: Promote and strengthen collaboration with national and international organizations for effective biodiversity management and conservation.
Clause 7: Foster value creation, innovation, and sustainable utilization of biodiversity through interdisciplinary integration and knowledge application.
Clause 8: Cultivate awareness and responsibility toward natural resource conservation, environmental protection, and local wisdom among students, faculty, and staff.
